Experience in the use of Ginkgo Biloba extract in the rehabilitation of patients with cerebral palsy

Cerebrovascular pathology is one of the important problems of clinical neurology. Vascular diseases of the central nervous system in the structure of all diseases associated with the liquidation of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, occupy from 30 to 50%. The basis of the complex of therapeutic measures for cerebrovascular pathology in victims of the Chernobyl disaster is the appointment of medications with the following properties: antioxidant, membrane-sparing, angioprotective, normalizing brain metabolism and preventing its hypoxia. However, long-term use of medications leads to allergization of the body and other side effects. As a rehabilitation factor that has the above properties, but does not have side effects, we used the biologically active supplement Ginkgo Long (an extract from the leaves of the ginkgo tree — Ginkgo biloba) from the company «NSP». A daily dose of 120 mg was prescribed, i.e. 1 capsule per day. The purpose of our study was to study the effect of E Gb on cerebral hemodynamics and functional activity of the brain. We observed a group of (10 patients) in whom cerebrovascular pathology was represented by initial representations of insufficiency of blood supply to the brain (60%) and dyscirculatory encephalopathy I-II stage. (40%). The average age of the treated patients was 40+5.7 years. Evaluation of the effectiveness of Ginkgo Long was carried out by comparing the results of clinical, neurophysiological research methods.

Clinical examination was carried out according to the classical schemes. Neurophysiological section included: Registration of baseline EEG and EEG after a course of treatment; dopplerography and longitudinal rheoencephalography. The main complaints of the patients were: headache, dizziness, decreased memory for current events, increased fatigue, decreased performance, emotional lability, blood pressure (BP) instability. After the course of treatment (30 days), patients showed a statistically significant (p<0.05) positive dynamics of the main neurological complaints (headache, dizziness, fluctuations in blood pressure, fatigue, memory loss, mood changes), a restructuring of the main EEG rhythms was observed in the form of an increase spectral power of alpha activity in the occipital regions, a decrease in the spectral activity of the delta rhythm in the central leads. On rheoencephalograms, a statistically significant (p<0.05) decrease in the tone of arterial cerebral vessels, optimization of venous outflow was noted. Doppler data showed an increase in arterial circulation in the main arteries of the head (carotid arteries, vertebral arteries), as well as an increase in venous outflow. Thus, the dietary supplement Ginkgo Long can be used in the rehabilitation program for patients with cerebrovascular pathology. Due to the small number of observations, this study should be continued.
