Fedorov S. N. (Ph.D.), Department of Medical Rehabilitation, Physiotherapy and Balneology, Kyiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education. PL Shupika For the optimal prescription of dietary supplements and phytopreparations, we should dwell on their main properties and application features. The main properties of dietary supplements and phytopreparations: — quickly compensate for the deficiency of essential substances in the body, especially micronutrients; — restore the activity of many enzyme systems of the body; — change the metabolism of toxic substances that enter the body or are formed as a result of metabolism, i.e. help to neutralize them; — increase the body’s defenses to adverse environmental factors; — regulate and support the functions of organs and systems of the human body, reducing morbidity and prolonging active longevity; — contribute to the prevention of many diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, atherosclerosis, cancer, etc. You must first prescribe a dietary supplement or herbal medicine in small doses to check how the body reacts to them, and then gradually increase to the recommended in the handbook. This is the easiest way to select a dose. There is also a method that requires additional knowledge by a nutritionist of the basics of oriental medicine. It involves an individual approach to the selection of the dose of nutraceuticals, taking into account the characteristics of the body (the state of its main organs and systems), their interaction with each other at the time of prescribing a dietary supplement or herbal remedy. Basically, nutraceuticals are prescribed with food for better absorption by the body. Dietary supplements or phytopreparations should be prescribed taking into account biological rhythms (daily, monthly, annual) in order to optimize their effect on a particular organ or functional system. Phytopreparations that increase efficiency, physical and mental activity, it is better to prescribe in the first half of the day, so as not to disturb sleep. Dietary supplements containing calcium should be taken between meals so as not to lower the acidity in the stomach, but it is better to drink them with milk or fermented milk products. Dietary supplements containing iron are recommended to be washed down with fruit juice, fruit drink or rosehip broth, since iron is better absorbed in the presence of vitamin C. It is not recommended to take pharmacological agents and herbal remedies at the same time. They can reinforce or weaken each other. You can not take herbal medicines containing dietary fiber and fiber along with antibiotics. Plant enterosorbents weaken the action of antibiotics by adsorbing and accelerating their excretion from the body. It should not be prescribed for long courses of treatment herbal remedies that have a laxative effect. This can lead to the development of intestinal atony, and then to atrophic changes in the mucosa. You do not need to be in direct sunlight for a long time after taking capsules with St. John’s wort extract. This can lead to skin burns. Phytopreparations that stimulate the immune system should be prescribed for no more than 10 days. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (such as omega-3s) are rapidly oxidized in the body, so they require a combination with a plant-based antioxidant. Coenzyme Q10 is fat soluble, so absorption is greatly enhanced when taken with a diet containing fats or an Omega-3 dietary supplement. Thus, focusing on the main properties and some aspects of taking dietary supplements and herbal remedies, we have shown the need for their non-standard prescription.
