Home teeth whitening

Sometimes teeth whitening procedures in the dental office can be overhead. Do not despair! After all, at home you can make a snow-white smile

Among the methods of home teeth whitening, there are both professional and folk options. In this article, we’ll take a look at both.

Professional home teeth whitening methods

This category often includes the use of various pastes, gels and chemical solutions that help lighten tooth enamel.

Whitening toothpastes

This method of home teeth whitening is the simplest. You just need to regularly use toothpastes with a whitening effect. Typically, the action of such toothpastes is built either on the principle of abrasiveness (the paste contains small solid particles that mechanically clean the surface of the enamel from contamination), or on the oxidative principle (in this case, the plaque simply dissolves).
However, it should be remembered that such an effect on the enamel is not useful. Therefore, home teeth whitening courses should not be repeated often (it is optimal to use the paste once every six months for two weeks). And certainly you should not completely replace the usual whitening paste.

This type of whitening is not deep, because. cleans only the surface of the teeth. A noticeable result can be observed only in those whose enamel by nature has a light shade.

Chemical bleaching with a gel (wearing mouthguards)

This type of home teeth whitening is only partially independent. You will have to complete the first stage of the course in the dentist’s office. There, personal mouthguards will be made for you, having previously removed a plaster cast. And they will also indicate the concentration of the gel solution, which is necessary for you, in order to minimize the harmful chemical effects on the enamel.

The principle of the method is that at home you will have to wear mouthguards filled with a solution. Usually the course is 10-15 procedures for 2 hours (there are also night guards, in which case the concentration of the solution decreases).

The disadvantage of home whitening teeth with a gel is the fact that the enamel can lighten in patches. That is, the final result will be homogeneous, but the intermediate one is unlikely to please you.

Folk methods of home teeth whitening

Folk methods are passed from mouth to mouth, advertised by friends and acquaintances, used to save money. But one should not be naive to assume that all of them are harmless only due to the fact of «naturalness». Many have heard about magical teeth whitening with salt or soda. However, this method is very dangerous. After all, too large particles erase the enamel, and salt also corrodes the soft tissues of the oral cavity.

We will tell you about neutral and harmless folk methods of teeth whitening, but we do not recommend getting carried away with them. Follow the rules for the procedures and do not be deceived that if it is natural, then it is always useful!

Lemon whitening

Lemon juice is a natural oxidizing agent. After completing a course of lemon whitening in the amount of 10 procedures, you will lighten the enamel by 1-2 tones. The procedure is recommended to be carried out in the evening after cleaning the teeth from dirt. Scrub your teeth with a cotton swab dipped in lemon juice for 30 seconds (approximately 1 second per tooth). Do not act on the juice for longer — this will cause soreness and irritation of the gums.

After the course, take a break for at least a month.

This method is not recommended for those who have severe tooth sensitivity.

Whitening with hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is an ingredient in many professional enamel whitening products. It can also be used for the same purpose for home teeth whitening. Simply rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide after brushing your teeth. A prerequisite is to thoroughly rinse your mouth with warm water after the procedure!

Do not carry out procedures for more than 10 days in a row. Take breaks.

Warning: Hydrogen peroxide thins enamel. Therefore, for those who have teeth that are highly sensitive, it is better not to use this method.

wood ash whitening

Common wood ash contains potassium hydroxide, a compound that has strong bleaching properties. Therefore, this method is one of the most effective methods of home teeth whitening.

Dip a wet brush into the ash and brush your teeth like you would with toothpaste. It should be noted that too frequent repetition of the procedure (more than 1 time per day, more than 20 days in a row) can thin the enamel and damage the gums.

Let your teeth be strong, healthy and beautiful!
