Argan oil

In terms of value, argon oil can be compared with rare fossils, and in terms of cost — with truffles, black caviar or oysters. This natural source of youth, health and beauty is used by leading cosmetic manufacturers and high-class culinary specialists.

Argan oil is a vegetable oil that is produced from the fruits of the prickly argan tree, a tree from the Sapotov family. This oil is considered one of the rarest in the world due to the limited and insignificant distribution area of argan. This tree grows in semi-deserts, it can only be found in Morocco or Algeria. Today, due to the danger of extinction, the argan tree is under the protection of the UNESCO organization, which has declared a huge territory (about 2.56 million hectares) in the southwest of Morocco as an Agran Biosphere Reserve. It extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Anti-Atlas and High Atlas mountains.

Outside of Morocco, argan oil became known relatively recently, although the Moroccan historian Abdelhadi Tazi claimed that his homeland was actively exporting argan oil as early as the 8th century. This rare product is made from the fruit of the prickly argan tree — a nut called «argan». It is ground and oil is manually squeezed out of it, using special millstones for this. Next, the resulting product is purified, and the oil, which will be used for cosmetic purposes, is flavored and poured into special bottles.

Chemical composition

The unique qualities of argan oil are due to its chemical composition. This product contains a huge amount of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which make up about 80% of this oil. These include oligo-linoleic acids, which prevent the aging of skin cells and reduce the likelihood of developing cardiovascular acids. No less valuable is linoleic acid, which can be obtained exclusively from the outside, since the human body does not produce it.

Argan oil is also rich in vitamins A, E, F and natural antioxidants, namely tocopherols and polyphenols, which have an anti-inflammatory effect. In addition, argan oil contains rare substances such as sterols (until they are found in any other oil), which have significant desensitizing and anti-inflammatory properties.

There are two types of argan oil: edible and cosmetic. The first is characterized by a darker color and a pronounced taste — this is due to heat treatment. Edible oil is very nutritious: it is used in cooking, in particular for the preparation of amlu paste, which also includes crushed almonds and honey. Moroccans usually eat this traditional pasta with bread for breakfast.

Cosmetic oil from argan is lighter, it is used for hair and skin applications. It is considered very useful in a number of skin diseases.
